Karate Blocking Techniques

The so-called blocking techniques are not used merely for evading an attack.  They are also used for controlling an opponent and for striking.  With practice a block can be made with devastating power.

At first, blocks are learned with a closed fist.  In particular this helps prevent the fingers from being sprained and broken against an opponent’s arm or leg.

Unnecessary tension in the fist inhibits free movement of the arm and can slow down the blocks.  In jyu kumite or free fighting, blocks are generally made with an open hand.
