In the Dojo we sometimes break down a Kata and go through it's applications. The hard bit however is to make these applications become second nature and use them in Kumite. How do you train Bunkai out of the Dojo, keeping in mind you should really train this with an opponent? Do you force your son/daughter, brother/sister or poor parent to play the willing target, do you have a buddy to practice with and build up speed in the applications?
I think a willing sparing partner is the way to go, as doing it by yourself is just practicing kata! Plus I think personal interpretation of the moves plays a big part as there is no set bunkai for each move, with a partner you can bounce ideas off each other. YouTube has plenty of bunkai videos which are good to watch. Some stay true to the kata and some have the move turned on their heads, both are just as relevant.
